The U.S. purchased about 980 as general-purpose utility transport with full-size doors on both sides of the cockpit so that it could be loaded from either side. It could be fitted with skis or floats and was used for observation and light transport duties. Though not very fast, they quickly got off the ground due to their inherent Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capabilities.
